An ancient city-state founded by the Elimi — a people of probable Trojan origin — Segesta was able to blend its Anatolian culture with Greek and Roman art, creating a monumental landscape that still takes your breath away today.

Located on Mount Barbaro, the city dominated the surrounding valleys, becoming over time one of the fiercest rivals of nearby Selinunte.

The Doric Temple: an unfinished masterpiece

The undisputed symbol of the park is the majestic Tempio Dorico. Built at the end of the 5th century BC, it stands alone on a hill, surrounded by wild nature that enhances its perfect proportions. Composed of 36 columns, the temple remained unfinished due to the wars with Selinunte and Carthage: the absence of the inner cell and the grooves in the columns give it a bare and solemn appearance that makes it unique in the world.

The Hellenistic Theater and the Acropolis

Climbing towards the summit of Monte Barbaro, you reach the Greco-Roman Theater. Dating back to the 2nd century BC, this theater is a true architectural marvel: the auditorium faces north, offering spectators (and today's tourists) a spectacular view of the Gulf of Castellammare. Even today, during the summer, the theater comes back to life thanks to the “Dionisiache,” a series of classical and modern theatrical performances that take place under the light of the setting sun.

The Acropolis area also preserves traces of the site's various historical layers:

The Agora and the Forum: centers of political and economic life in the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

Medieval traces: the remains of a mosque, a castle, and a small Norman church, evidence of how Segesta was inhabited and transformed until the 13th century.

Visiting Segesta: useful tips

The archaeological park is very large and requires a good walk, but there is a shuttle service connecting the temple area to the theater at the top. In addition to the main monuments, it is worth exploring the Valley Gate and the ancient fortifications, which reveal the military importance of this ancient metropolis.

Foto di copertina di Ellen26 su Pixabay

See also the tour at the Zingaro Nature Reserve

Explore Segesta, the ancient metropolis of the Elymians.
