Perched 752 meters above sea level, this town retains its medieval charm, with cobbled streets, flower-filled courtyards, and a light mist, known as “venere,” which often envelops it, creating an almost surreal atmosphere.

Founded by the Elimi, Erice is a place where ancient history intertwines with legend: here stood the famous temple dedicated to the goddess of love (Astarte for the Phoenicians, Venus for the Romans), a destination for pilgrims from all over the Mediterranean.

What to see in Erice: from the Castle of Venus to the Cathedral

The heart of the village is a maze of narrow streets that lead to endless discoveries. Here are the key stops:

The Castle of Venus: built by the Normans on the ruins of an ancient temple, it offers breathtaking views stretching from the Egadi Islands to San Vito Lo Capo.

The Balio Gardens: adjacent to the castle, they are the ideal place for a scenic walk among medieval towers and manicured hedges.

The Royal Cathedral (Mother Church): commissioned by Frederick III of Aragon in 1314, it is striking for its imposing bell tower and richly decorated neo-Gothic interior.

The Cyclopean Walls: evidence of the ancient Elymian-Punic city walls (Porta Trapani, Porta Carmine, and Porta Spada), whose foundations date back almost three thousand years.

Erice, “City of Science” and Crafts

Not just ancient history: thanks to the Center for Scientific Culture “Ettore Majorana”, founded by Professor Antonino Zichichi, Erice is known worldwide as a center of excellence for physics and research.

As you stroll through the village, you will also notice the vibrancy of local handicrafts. The city is also known for the ericine carpets, hand-woven with colorful geometric designs, and the decorated ceramics , which make each workshop a small open-air museum.

A mouth-watering stop: the Genovese of Erice

One cannot say one has visited Erice without tasting the Genovese. This crumbly shortbread pastry, filled with warm custard and dusted with powdered sugar, is the epitome of local pastry, born within the walls of cloistered convents. Along with the mustaccioli and almond sweets, represents the perfect souvenir of this unforgettable trip.

Foto di copertina di Depistotele su Pixabay

See also the tour of Alcamo

Erice is a medieval village unlike any other in the world, suspended between the myth of Venus and the beauty of Sicilian landscapes.
