Between the art of Serpotta, medieval history and the scent of DOC wine
Located at the foot of Mount Bonifato, in a strategic position overlooking the entire Gulf of Castellammare, Alcamo is an essential stop for those who want to discover the noble and peasant soul of western Sicily. Hometown of Ciullo d’Alcamo, author of the famous “Rosa fresca aulentissima,” this city is not only an agricultural center of excellence, but a true treasure chest of Baroque and medieval treasures.
The Castle of the Counts of Modica and the medieval heart.
Alcamo's profile is unmistakably marked by the Castle of the Counts of Modica. Built in the 14th century, it is one of the best-preserved military architectures in the area. Its crenellated towers tell of a past of feuds and noble powers, when the town expanded around its Mother Church.
Walking through the center, you arrive in Ciullo Square, the city's living room, rearranged in the 1990s by renowned architect Gae Aulenti. It is here that the heart of Alcamo's social life beats, among aristocratic palaces and church facades that hide unexpected treasures.
A Journey into the Baroque: Gagini and Serpotta
For art lovers, Alcamo is an ongoing revelation. Its churches hold priceless works of art:
- Mother Church: majestic and baroque, houses frescoes by Guglielmo Borremans and sculptures by Antonello Gagini, as well as a 14th-century fresco of Pentecost.
- Giacomo Serpotta's statues: Alcamo boasts one of the highest concentrations of stucco work by the master Serpotta. The churches of Sts. Cosmas and Damian and St. Francis of Paola are mandatory stops to admire the lightness and elegance of these off-white sculptures.
- Our Lady of Honey: In the Church of Sts. Paul and Bartholomew, you can admire this very rare 14th-century panel, a destination of ancient devotion.
Nature and flavors: from Mount Bonifato to Bianco d'Alcamo
Alcamo is not only sacred art. Mount Bonifato, with its Nature Reserve, offers trekking trails and an archaeological area that testifies to the city's very ancient origins, dating back to the 8th century BC.
And after so much culture, the palate wants its share. Alcamo is world-famous for its Alcamo DOC wine, a fresh and fragrant white wine that comes from the area's lush vineyards. Also not to be missed is the Winter melon “Purceddu”, a Slow Food Presidium representing the excellence of local biodiversity.
